Teams sometimes wait for a namespace to become enormous before considering object storage. A better decision starts with how the data grows, how long it lives, and what the business must do with it.

Start with workload behavior

NAS may remain appropriate for collaborative file workflows and low-latency path semantics. Object storage becomes compelling when durability, scale, metadata, or multi-application access dominate.

Count operational constraints

Frequent forklift upgrades, manual capacity balancing, independent departmental systems, and difficult cross-site protection can justify change before file count alone does.

Adopt through a measurable use case

Begin with a data class that has clear growth and retention requirements. Gateways, synchronization, or staged migration can preserve application continuity while the new platform proves value.
