Images, video, audio, logs, documents, and model artifacts are all unstructured data. Object storage manages each item as an object with its content, identifier, and metadata—an approach designed for scale and automation.
Files and objects answer different needs
File systems organize content through directories and familiar path semantics. Object systems use unique identifiers and rich metadata, which helps very large namespaces scale and remain searchable.
Metadata carries business context
An object can be associated with equipment, lot, owner, retention class, or model version. That context enables lifecycle rules and application-driven discovery without encoding everything in a folder name.
When object storage fits
Object storage is especially effective for large, durable collections accessed through applications or gateways. Performance, consistency, protocol, and small-file requirements should still be validated against the actual workload.
